Swedish Massage aftercare: your first 24 hours (60 min session)

In our beautiful, tranquil space, it’s easy to float out after your massage and forget the basics. Don’t. The single most important Swedish Massage aftercare rule in the first 24 hours is simple: hydrate and give your body a real recovery window. Drink water, eat something light, and take it easy for at least an hour. Skip hot tubs, heavy workouts, and alcohol so you keep that “melted tension” feeling instead of waking up sore.
Your 0 to 48-hour Swedish Massage aftercare checklist (the stuff that matters)
Our 60-minute Swedish massage uses long, flowing strokes to calm your nervous system, improve circulation, and reduce muscle tension. Right after, your body’s often in that “deep exhale” mode. Protect it.
Do this first: Drink water over the next few hours, eat a light snack, and rest at least an hour. If you’re heading back out on West Liberty Avenue after your appointment, keep errands short and save the heavy stuff for tomorrow.
What we generally recommend avoiding for 24 to 48 hours
- Vigorous exercise and heavy lifting: Wait 24 to 48 hours before a hard workout. A gentle walk is fine if it feels good.
- Hot tubs, saunas, and very hot showers: Heat ramps up circulation and can make post-massage tenderness feel louder.
- Alcohol: It can dehydrate you and leave you feeling more sluggish or headachey.
Pittsburgh summers get humid fast. That’s when we see people feel “wiped out” after massage if they don’t drink enough water. Keep a bottle with you and sip, especially if you’re hopping back in the car or onto transit.
The first week: keep the “entirely relaxed” feeling without getting sidelined
A lot of people tell us they walk out feeling entirely relaxed, and we want you to keep that going. For most bodies, the first week after a Swedish massage is about gentle consistency.
Do more of this
- Short mobility breaks for your neck and shoulders, especially if you’re commuting around Pittsburgh and notice that driving posture creep in.
- Gentle stretching your therapist recommended, held comfortably, never forced.
- Normal meals and steady hydration, not a big “reset” day followed by nothing.
Steer clear of this if you’re feeling tender
- Going straight back to max effort workouts before your body feels ready.
- Stacking heat on heat, like sauna plus hot tub plus hot yoga, in the first day or two.
- Ignoring soreness that’s getting worse instead of better.
And in Pittsburgh winters, when everything tightens up, a warm shower can feel great. Just keep it warm, not scalding, and give your body a few hours before you turn the heat all the way up.
Shower, skin, and simple products after Swedish massage (no fancy shelf required)
Yes, you can shower after your Swedish massage. We just want you to keep it lukewarm for the first several hours. Hot water can ramp up redness and make worked areas feel more sensitive.
Quick shower guidance: Use lukewarm water, go easy on freshly worked areas, and pat your skin dry instead of scrubbing. Hold off on strong exfoliants over any area that feels tender.
If your skin feels dry after, use a light, unscented moisturizer or the post-massage oil your therapist recommends. Keep it simple. Strong fragrance can sometimes feel like too much right after bodywork.
If you’re a shift worker with a tight recovery window, do the basics that actually move the needle: water, a snack, a short rest, and 2 minutes of gentle neck rolls before you head back out.
When to reach out to our Brookline team (and when it’s just normal)
Mild soreness, feeling sleepy, or a little lightheaded can be normal after a 60-minute Swedish massage, especially if you came in carrying a lot of neck and shoulder tension. Most of the time, hydration and a quiet evening does the trick.
But don’t try to power through anything that feels off. Let us know if you have sharp or worsening pain, significant swelling, numbness, or fever. If something feels urgent, seek medical care.
Firstly and most importantly everyone is VERY KIND.
